Tuesday (November 27) marks 70 years since the birth of Jimi Hendrix, the man who changed electric guitar and rock’n'roll forever. For the past few weeks, CBS Local has discussed the man’s impact with musicians who came after him, his peers, and even one of his main inspirations. Everyone felt his influence, whether it was on their guitar playing, or their singing. Some even found a new direction for their life thanks to Jimi.
“He really dissolved the lines between convention and personal expression… Where did he get that stuff from? There was no place that he could copy that stuff from? ‘Cause nobody was doing it… To this day, I still marvel at the notes and the way he played the guitar. The way he sang was uber, ultra cool.”
“The Voice” season 1 finalist Beverly McClellan has gotten some exposure to rock fans lately: she guests on guitar god Steve Vai’s new album “The Story Of Light,” singing a cover of Blind Willie Johnson’s “John The Revelator,” and she’s also opening for him on his current tour. Vai told CBS Local that when he heard McClellan sing at at NARAS event, he knew he wanted to collaborate with her.
Steve Vai is currently on tour for his new record, “The Story Of Light,” a concept album with a long cast of characters. In a recent interview, Vai told CBS Local that he was “casting” the album even as he was writing it. In his mind, Tom Waits and Pink would be idea to play two of the roles, should he ever produce a movie based on the album.
