According to Billboard, the Sean Durkin-directed project is titled Janis, and it’s based on a book by Joplin’s sister Laura called Love, Janis. The book depicts the singer’s coffee shop-to-Woodstock journey through the composition of letters written to her family and friends.
Janis Joplin died of a heroin overdose at the young age of 27, just months before the release of her fourth studio album. While Williams didn’t grow up singing, she did take vocal lessons in order to perform as Marilyn Monroe in the film My Week with Marilyn, and began working on Broadway three years later. However, her singing sounds nothing like Joplin’s, so a voice double may need to be called in for the biopic.
