Sunday Morning Blues: June 12th, 2016

The beginning set of the show was inspired by a new Alligator records release entitled “God Don’t Ever Change: the Songs of Blind Willie Johnson.”

Johnson was a preacher/musician who wrote some of America’s greatest blues songs including “Motherless Children” (covered by Eric Clapton and Steve Miller), “Nobody’s Fault But Mine” (covered by Led Zeppelin) and “Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning” (covered by Mississippi Fred McDowell and Hot Tuna). He recorded in the twenties and is buried in Beaumont, Texas.

This new collection contains generous and informative liner notes, plus contemporary artists performing the best of the Johnson repertoire. Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, Tom Waits, Luther Dickinson, Lucinda Williams and even Sinead O’Connor participate. Long live a legend, and thank you to Alligator for this fine release.

Also, thank you to Megan in Roslindale for the CHOOSE YOUR BLUES list which spotlighted guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd, who’s celebrating a birthday today!
