Paul McCartney: Claiming to Be Bigger Than The Beatles Is The ‘Kiss Of Death’

by Alisha Jackson

Being bigger than The Beatles is one thing, but saying that you’re bigger than The Beatles is a whole other animal.

According to Paul McCartney, claiming to be bigger than the fab four was Oasis’ biggest career mistake. “Oasis were young, fresh and writing good tunes,” McCartney told Q Magazine. “I thought the biggest mistake they made was when they said ‘We’re going to be bigger than The Beatles’.” Paul is referring to an interview the band did back in 1996 with MTV, where an admittedly “high” Noel Gallagher said that Oasis was bigger than The Beatles.

“I thought ‘So many people have said that, and it’s the kiss of death,’” McCartney continued. “Be bigger than The Beatles, but don’t say it. The minute you say it, everything you do from then on is going to be looked at in the light of that statement.”

Do you think Oasis would still be atop the charts if Noel hadn’t made the reportedly drug-induced claim?
