Sunday Morning Blues: May 22nd, 2016

A triumvirate of birthdays began our show this week. 1st up was Joe Cocker, the great R & B shouter from Sheffield, England who became a renowned interpreter of some of Classic Rock’s greatest hits and turned them into new creations. Joe was born on May 20, 1944 and passed away in 2014. While he was best known for his early works, in his later career in 1989, he recorded a well-received concert album at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium – “Joe Cocker Live” is worth searching out.

Dusty Hill, bassist for ZZ Top had a birthday party on May 19th and continues to tour with the band, even though he took a nasty tumble backstage in Texas recently which resulted in several rescheduled dates.

Finally, we honored the legendary singer Big Joe Turner, born May 18, 1911 and taken from us in 1985 after a long career loaded with R & B hits. We ended with a historic recording of Big Joe Turner just three years before his death, playing at Lupos in Providence with Roomful of Blues.

Thanks to Marc DePriest from beautiful downtown Malden for the fine CHOOSE YOUR BLUES list this week. Marc emailed in a long one, but we had to play all five songs because they were all so great! We’ve got a Sunday Morning Blues T-shirt heading his way!
