Jimmy Carter Thanks Gregg Allman For Helping Him Become President During Doctorate Ceremony

by Alisha Jackson

Over the weekend, former president Jimmy Carter bestowed an honorary doctorate of humanities from Mercer University on Gregg Allman that only three musicians have received in the past 183 years.

In the video below, president William D. Underwood can be seen telling Allman, “You have certainly proven yourself most deserving of this recognition by virtue of your extraordinary career.”

Jimmy Carter drew laughs from the crowd when he took the podium and credited the Allman Brothers Band for helping him become president. “When the Allman Brothers, back in 1976, adopted me and began to let the nation know I was okay with them, most people said, ‘Well, if he’s okay with the Allman Brothers then he must be qualified to be president,” said Carter.

A few years ago, Gregg admitted to laughing at then-Governor Jimmy Carter when he said he said he’d be president one day. Watch his hysterical exchange with Conan O’Brien below.
