Gondoliers are John Manson – vocals, Daniel Madri – guitar and synths, Brendan Gibson – drums
Gondoliers are a dangerous, messy band. Part twisted dance band, part jarring noise band, but a band not without familiarity.
Latest release, 2013’s Tonight’s Whispering, is a split release with Midriff and 100% Breakfast. It follows their summer 2o13 release, Eat Your Heart Out, on 100% Breakfast and the 2012 self-released debut Citadel.
With that the band dives in headlong with their poison vapor synths and a hailstorm of guitars through laser storm prog, the gnarled electronics of Einsturzende Neubauten, the off-balance drums of Jawbox, guitars that swerve between Duane Denison and Thurston Moore all with the looseness and fun of a Pavement record.
Gondoliers had originally released a handful of instrumental records as a two-piece before hooking up with Manson for their first stab at recording together in 2011. Manson was already one of the most recognizable performers in the Boston area.
He’d spent years howling through gas masks and bashing battered metal drums in Neptune and fronting the Young Sexy Assassins from behind an onstage desk. Manson is now with Gondoliers, watch and see what happens.
