On September 24, 1994, Eric Clapton performed as part of the 20th season premiere of Saturday Night Live. Watch his performance of his version of Eddie Boyd’s “Five Long Years” here (fair warning: the audio and video quality is poor). Surprisingly, he hasn’t been back on the show since.

Clapton was in the midst of a career resurgence that had been sparked by his Grammy-winning Unplugged album. His new record at the time, however, was From the Cradle, a covers album. The record at the time received mixed reviews, but perhaps he didn’t want to release an album of originals to follow up such a massively successful LP as Unplugged.
