Remember That Time KISS Appeared Without Makeup For The First Time Ever?
Yeah, we’d probably rather forget it too.
September 18, 1983 marks the day KISS appeared without their trademark makeup in public for the first time ever, in a strange interview with MTV. The way they reveal the guys’ faces is more awkward than you could ever imagine. Watch the entire awkward interview in the video above.
They removed the face paint to basically shake things up, an odd choice considering the makeup was their signature. They kept the over-the-top stage show to go with their performances, though.
The album KISS promoted at the time, Lick It Up, was their first gold record in three years, a relative success. The 1996 reunion of the original lineup would bring back the full makeup and costumes, after they had something of an identity crisis during their normal-face years.
No point in ever removing the makeup again, or so one would assume.
