Sunday Morning Blues: 2/3/2013

Carter Alan /

This week, one of our features was a tribute to Skip James, an often overlooked bluesman who was embraced by people like Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker in their band Cream.

James recorded his wonderfully high pitched and clear voice in the 30’s, but his records didn’t becomes hits, perhaps due to the financial straits people were thrown into at the beginning of the Great Depression. Discouraged, James left the recording business and actually would become a preacher for a time. During the great British Blues boom of the early and mid-Sixties and resulting Blues Revival on American college campuses, James was ‘discovered.’

He began touring after causing a sensation at the Newport Folk and Blues Festival and recorded a few new albums before passing away in 1969. You heard Dion’s tribute – “The Son of Skip James,” the Derek Truck Trucks Band doing his “Crow Jane,” and the original and cover versions of “I’m So Glad” by Cream (from their first album in 1966. Long live Skip James!

The new James Montgomery Band album is in! Arrived moments before we did the show. The tribute to Johnny Winter with Johnny on slide, Bad Whitford on guitar and Joey Kramer on drums is a monster!!

Also, a big thanks to Joe Nett for the fine CHOOSE YOUR BLUES playlist! A Sunday Morning blues T-shirt is heading your way!
