In 2008, U2’s concert movie U2:3D opened in select IMAX theaters. 21 years earlier, U2 played live on top of a Los Angeles roof to shoot the video for “Where the Streets Have No Name.” What was the name of the store they played above?

Answer: Republic Liquors

Here’s the rest of today’s Rock N’ Roll Diary!

  • Happy birthday: Paul Stanley of KISS!
  • 1968: Bob Dylan appears for the first time since his alleged Woodstock, New York motorcycle accident in 1966. It was a concert at Carnegie Hall for the late Woody Guthrie, who had died four months earlier.
  • 1970: John Lennon and Yoko Ono shave their heads and declare 1970 as “Year One for Peace.”
  • 1982: Ozzy Osbourne is hospitalized with Rabies after he bites the head off of a dead bat thrown on stage by a fan in De Moines, Iowa – he had been biting fake bats prior. The accident forced the cancellation of all of Ozzy’s shows at the time, including a scheduled live nationwide broadcast.
  • 1986: The very first Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony is held in New York City.
