Bay Area rock legends Metallica have announced the details regarding the band’s upcoming concert film, Metallica Through The Never, which is now set for wide release in American movie theaters on August 9.

“We’re back with an update on that little project we told you about last year… the Metallica 3D movie filmed in Vancouver in August of 2012,” the band announced on their official website today (January 15). “Some of you were kind enough to be a huge part of our three nights of filming and may be wondering just what the heck has been happening since then. Throughout the Fall and first part of this year, we’ve been working with director Nimród Antal and a team of editors to pull all the pieces together and so we are beyond excited to now actually have a release date and a title… drum-roll please, ‘Metallica Through The Never’ coming to theaters on August 9!”

The statement goes on to detail that Metallica will be teaming up with resurrected independent film distributor Picturehouse for the project, responsible for distributing such breakout art-house hits as Pan’s Labyrinth, Passion of the Christ, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and La Vie en Rose.

“Like your friends in ‘Tallica, Picturehouse is truly independent, take big chances and often think outside of the box,” the band enthused about the revived distributor.

“It goes without saying that we are really just getting rolling here and will have many more updates for you,” the statement concluded. “And of course, we can’t wait for you to see the film!!”

Metallica’s drummer Lars Ulrich recently compared Metallica Through The Never to Led Zeppelin’s classic 1976 movie and live album release, The Song Remains The Same.

“There are four members in Led Zeppelin, four members in Metallica, it’s a full-length movie, and there’s a lot in this film that does not take place onstage,” Ulrich told Classic Rock magazine.

“The major difference is that the stuff that takes place offstage in the Metallica movie does not feature any members of Metallica,” Ulrich added. “It’s two separate worlds – a Metallica show and a story that unfolds in a parallel universe – and at some point they intertwine.”
