In 1974 John Lennon performed onstage at Madison Square Garden with Elton John. It was payoff on a bet he made with Elton that he would perform with him if what collaborative single hit #1?

Answer: Whatever Gets You Through The Night

Here’s the rest of today’s Rock N’ Roll Diary!

  • Happy birthday to the first Beatles drummer Pete Best and also Bev Bevans, drummer of the Electric Light Orchestra … also happy birthday to WZLX alum – Charles Lauidara!
  • 1964: The Who, playing for the first time with their new name (formerly they were The High Numbers), perform at London’s Marquee Club and begin a sold out run of 16 weeks at that venue.
  • 1971: D.B. Cooper parachutes from a Northwest Airlines plane with $200,000 and is never seen again.
  • 1972: TV series “In Concert” premieres on ABC. Created to allow rock acts to perform in front of a live audience with the same high-quality sound they get in studios, the program debuted with a slew of performers including Poco, Alice Cooper, Chuck Berry, and the Allman Brothers, who rocked classic hits like “Ramblin’ Man.”
  • 1991: Queen frontman Freddy Mercury dies of AIDS-related illnesses and KISS drummer Eric Carr dies of cancer. He was with the group for nine years.
  • 2006: The Rolling Stones’ “A Bigger Bang” world tour receives the title as the top-grossing tour of all time, raking in a staggering $437 million. The classic rockers’ worldwide trek shattered the previous record-holder—U2’s “Vertigo” tour—by more than $100 million.
  • And from the WZLX ticket stash…Keith Richards and the Expensive Winos began their U.S. tour at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, GA in 1988.
