At the venue once known as “Great Woods” and now known as the Comcast Center, Neil Young & Crazy Horse played the first of two nights on the H.O.R.D.E. (Horizons of Rock Developing Everywhere) Tour on August 8, 1997.
John Popper of the band Blues Traveler founded the H.O.R.D.E. Tour in 1992 to deliver great jam band music on both national and local levels, and provide the ampitheater setting the bands on the tour desired for their summer tour dates. Famous jam bands like Phish and Widespread Panic joined the original incarnation of the festival, which brought in Neil Young and Crazy Horse for a special appearance at the 1997 edition of the tour.
The jam-heavy festival was just in time for the band, who just the year before had just released the album Broken Arrow, which featured three long jam tracks to open it.
As you’ll see on this t-shirt from the tour, Boston (technically Mansfield!) was the only city on the tour to play for two straight nights. Here are the set lists from the two Neil Young shows, according to SugarMtn.org:
Night 1 – August 8, 1997
- Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black)
- Crime In The City
- Hippie Dream
- Jam
- Big Time
- From Hank To Hendrix
- The Needle And The Damage Done
- Ohio
- Throw Your Hatred Down
- Powderfinger
- Tonight’s The Night
- Sedan Delivery
- Rockin’ In The Free World
Night 2 – August 9, 1997
- Slip Away

- Crime In The City
- Heart Of Gold
- The Needle And The Damage Done
- Southern Man
- Throw Your Hatred Down
- Big Time
- Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black)

As you see, Young’s two sets were wildly varied and a great treat for fans who went both nights. Did you go to either of them? Share your memories in the comments!
