On this date in 1981, Van Halen came to town to play back-to-back nights at the Boston Garden.

The American rockers have sold more than 75 million albums worldwide and released 15 albums that reached the top 10 in the U.S.  In fact, besides their 1978 self-titled debut every album the band released afterwards reached the top 10, with five reaching the No. 1 spot!

The concert came just months after the release of their 1981 album, Fair Warning, which reached No. 5 in the U.S. and went double platinum.

The band has also garnered a large amount of press coverage because of their changing line up and dramatic departures. David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar and Gary Cherone have all been lead singers for the band.

Van Halen took home a Grammy Award in 1992 for “Best Hard Rock Performance” and has also won a number of other awards for their work.

Video footage from that night at the Garden is unavailable, but here is a clip from another show in the same year, live in Oakland singing their song “Unchained.”  Enjoy!
