Keith Richards and Rolling Stones producer Don Was will co-produce the next solo album by Neville Brothers star Aaron Neville, due out this fall. Was, who in recent years has worked on records by John Mayer, Lucinda Williams and Ringo Starr, is currently the President of Blue Note Records, the label releasing the album.
The still untitled record will feature covers of classic material from the doo-wop era. Neville selected the songs himself, and said in a statement, “When I was a kid, doo-wop was like medicine to me. I didn’t care what else was goin’ on in the world as long as I could sing along with Pookie Hudson and The Spaniels, The Flamingos, The Clovers, Sonny Til and The Orioles, Clyde McPhatter—I was like a kid in a candy store.”
Richards and Was have, of course, worked together on Stones projects for nearly two decades. Was produced 1994′s Voodoo Lounge, 1995′s live Stripped, 1997′s Bridges To Babylon, the new songs on 2002′s Forty Licks collection, 2004′s Live Licks, and 2005′s A Bigger Bang, as well as the reissues of Exile On Main Street and Some Girls.
