This week on Sunday Morning Blues we began with three “Yesterday and Today”-type sets, tracing the progress of three beloved Classic Rock bands noticeably influenced by the Blues. First up, Little Feat – that band’s recent “Join the Band” album revisits many of their classic hits with new lead singers joining in, including Emmylou Harris (who sang “Sailin’ Shoes,” along with Bob Seger, Christ Robinison, Jimmy Buffett and Dave Matthews.
While the Rolling Stones try to figure out what, if anything, they are going to do for their 50th anniversary year, they got together with piano player Ben Waters in a heartfelt tribute to their late piano player/mentor/R.Stones-co-founder Ian Stewart. Their version of Bob Dylan’s “Watching the River Flow” is priceless – and it reunites them with original bassist Bill Wyman.
Finally we offered up a nugget from the Allman Brothers Band’s Beacon Theater run in 2009 – when Eric Clapton got up to dazzle on a solid “Key to the Highway.” This, on the recent occasion of the band’s Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award.
Also, a big thank you to Paul Nastasia of Billerica who gave us a great CHOOSE YOUR BLUES list. A Sunday morning blues T-shirt is on the way!
